The connoisseurs of old Kannada stage can never forget one of its stalwarts, Kotturu Basavaiah (1888-1976), popularly known as Kotturappa. He excelled himself in roles of devotion like those of Anjaneya and Narada. His acting as Tukaram also became immensely popular.

Raj Kumar, the celebrated actor, producer and singer is a phenomenon by himself. Immensely popular with the masses, he held the cine lovers spellbound with his histrionics for around four decades. Known as the thespian of the South, he essayed the role of Tukaram in Santha Tukaram, directed by Sundar Rao Nadakarni. Noted cinematographer D V Rajaram, who passed away recently, known for his innovative camera techniques entered the Kannada film industry with Santha Tukaram. The film was a success at the box office and Dr. Raj Kumar had given an exceptional performance in the film.Dr. Raj Kumar was honoured with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema in 1996.

Recently Virupax Kulkarni has translated Tukaram biography in Kannada. The translation is based on "Sant Tukaram yaance sankshipt charitra" by Shridar More.
